The Squeeezebox asked:

I’ve been told I sing well, I believe I sing well. I just don’t know how to read music and am intimidated by other musicians. How do I start performing live, or get into a music situation? I would love some suggestions

The best thing to do is practice. It’ll get over that intimidation thing that many people have. I highly recommend taking up an instrument like trumpet or clarinet (preferably not guitar, you usually don’t end up learning the important stuff unless you’re classically trained) ; it’ll tune your ear and teach you how to read music. Start with community or school theatre, and join a choir. That’ll give you some experience, and more confidence. An ability to read music is a must for many jobs involving singing, and one who can read music will be hired over one who can’t in most cases.
    Good luck! :)
