knowledge_seeker asked:

I know it varies from person to person, but on average how long will it take for a student to comfortably read music. Any music teachers out there?

As a music teacher for beginners, the average time to take to learn to read music is about 4-6 weeks with daily practices and exercises

As time spent learning increases, time it takes to learn decreases. This is in terms of time per day being spent learning and time it takes to learn being in terms of the time from start to finish. (Hyperbola?) By this I mean that you’re probably really confused and all I wanted to say is that you won’t know how long it’s going to take you until you actually do it and become efficient. Then you will know how long it takes! If you don’t know by then, you are silly.

A lot depends on what instrument you are performing on.
Piano would take longer than trumpet. Piano you are learning 2 stafs and several notes at the same time.
I recommend that you purchase flash cards. A 4th grade student can usually learn to read all of a staff in 2 weeks. To learn all the sharps flats etc. will take most of the rest of a semester.
