Sia W asked:

I’m getting a violin this coming Tuesday, and I know being able to read music is important for most instruments.
So, I was just wondering how long it might take to learn how to read it from scratch.
Thanks in advance!

its obviously much easier if you start your training at a young age

i began formal music training at age 6, and i could read music by the time i was 8, so it doesn’t take that long

hell it may even be quicker for adults. if a stupid little kid like me could do it anyone can

It’s like any other skill… Once you get the hang of it it’s not that hard. You can teach yourself or get lessons. I recommend the lessons. -john in Iowa (played for 15 years)

it depends how fast you learn things. i would suggest getting flash cards, they have them at music stores and they help a lot!
also your teacher will probably teach you little tricks like…
the treble clef spaces spell FACE
the treble clef lines spell EGBDF or Every Good Boy Does Fine

bass clef lines spell ACEG or All Cars Eat Gas
bass clef lines spell GBDFA or Gods Balloon Does Fly Away
(these all start at the bottom and go up)
    hope this helps!
