D.J asked:

How long does it take to learn how to sightread? Every piece I play, I have to look at the notes and use the “every good boy does fine” acronym. It takes a long time for me to figure out how to play a piece because of my lacking ability to read music notes. I started piano this year, in January, and I do no think I made any progress. I know how to find the notes and locate them on a piano, but give me a foreign piece, and I am lost. What does it take to learn music notes?

    It takes: practice.

Seriously! I used to use the acronym ‘every good boy deserves football’ too because it was sort of useful to me; however soon I just managed to sight read the notes because my mind knew all the places on the stave. Yes when it went into ledger lines it was a bit tougher but I worked it out pretty quickly. All because of practice :)

You’re on the right path, keep up what ever helps you recognize notes. Down the path you’ll look at an E and hear the start of a phrase rather than “Every”

For me, I recognize the notes after playing the piece once or twice all the way through. We (my teacher and group) play it full speed one time (horribly) and then we slow down a little to grasp the notes. If we learn to play it slow, it may be hard to grasp a faster tempo.

You definitely need to learn to read music well before playing, though.

I never depended on that acronym before…Heard it before but never used it.

Actually, sightreading is pretty easy as long as you put the effort to sightread new stuff. The easiest way is probably to get more sheet music and just sightread bits off them. That’s what I did when I first started piano.

Now sightreading is no longer an issue, although I take more time to sightread ledger line notes but its still comparatively easier than when I first started.

Well, It’s pretty easy for me because I started since I was in 1st grade, but It does actually take practice. Once you start practicing, Then You’ll get used to it. Don’t Worry. After all, this is your first year.

My music teacher drew a person and named him EGBDF so we could Remember.

    Hope this helps!
