Musical intervals, the distance between any two pitches, have two attributes: a size, and a quality. For example, the interval from A to C-sharp is a major third. The interval’s size is simply determined by counting up from the first pitch to the second. A-B-C-sharp, one-two-three.
Its quality refines this measurement. An interval’s quality can be perfect, major, minor, diminished, or augmented. Perfect intervals include unisons (firsts), fourths, fifths, and octaves. Major and minor intervals are seconds, thirds, sixths, and sevenths. Any interval size can be diminished or augmented.
